Test DCP: How to Verify Projection and Sound

A test DCP is a standardised package for verifying the complete projection and audio chain in a digital cinema. We explain what it contains and how to use it to check geometry, sharpness, colour and 7.1 audio channels.

What is a test DCP and why use one

A DCP (Digital Cinema Package) is the standardised content format for digital cinema as defined by SMPTE and DCI specifications. A test DCP is a special package - it does not contain film content but a set of technical test patterns and audio signals designed to verify the complete projection and audio chain from the cinema server through to the screen and loudspeakers.

Without regular testing, quality can degrade imperceptibly: slightly shifted screen geometry, imperfect sharpness in the corners, colour deviation or a silent audio channel. Some of these issues are not easily noticed during regular public screenings - especially if cinema staff have no reference for the correct state. A test DCP gives technicians an objective reference.

What a test DCP checks and how to use it

A typical test DCP contains: a geometric alignment pattern (crosshatch grid, corners, FLAT and SCOPE format boundaries), gradient ramps for checking gamma and contrast, colour patches (R/G/B/White/Black) for calibration verification, and audio tracks for all 5.1 and 7.1 channels including LFE. The technician works through each pattern and listens to each channel - logging any deviations from the expected state in a service report.

We recommend running a test DCP after every service intervention in the projection booth or audio system, after projector replacement, or after a cinema server firmware update. We also use it when commissioning new cinemas as a final verification before the first public screening.

Visit the test DCP download page and download the package to verify your cinema.
