End of support for Windows 10: is it time to consider an upgrade?
Every cinema is a technological whole that depends on the reliability of its individual systems. One of the key components of the projection booth is the PC used to control the DCI technology, automation, the TMS or playlist management. Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end for good on October 14, 2025. What does that mean for cinema operators?
Why is upgrading important?
Once support ends, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates. That means the system will gradually become more vulnerable to cyber threats that could disrupt a cinema's operation. On top of that, newer software and drivers will increasingly be optimized for Windows 11, which can lead to gradual incompatibility with modern systems.
Old hardware? It may no longer be enough
Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements. Older computers may not meet conditions such as TPM 2.0 or support for newer processors. If the PC running in your projection booth is several years old, it is worth considering replacing it with a more modern model that will ensure the stable operation of the whole cinema.
Do not forget the network infrastructure
Over the years, not only PCs but also network elements can wear out. Routers, switches and cabling are a critical part of running a cinema, especially if you use automated systems. Older network elements can slow down transfers, increase latency or be vulnerable to new cyber threats. It is therefore worth considering modernizing them.
What now?
The best time to plan an upgrade is right now. Check whether your PC meets the requirements for Windows 11, and if it does not, start thinking about new hardware. At the same time, we recommend reviewing the state of your network infrastructure and considering possible upgrades.
