Mobile LED wall: a large-format display with no fixed installation

A large LED wall no longer has to mean complex assembly, a fixed structure and a display surface that stays in one place for its whole life. Mobile All-in-One LED walls are a new category of professional display systems, combining the benefits of Direct View LED technology with the ability to move between rooms.

A large LED wall no longer has to mean complex assembly, a fixed structure and a display surface that stays in one place for its whole life. Mobile All-in-One LED walls are a new category of professional display systems, combining the benefits of Direct View LED technology with the ability to move between rooms.

A typical example is the ViewSonic LDS136-152 - a foldable 136" LED display delivered as a complete pre-assembled system on a mobile stand. There is no need to fix it to a wall or build it from individual LED cabinets. Thanks to its foldable design it can be moved between conference halls, meeting rooms or other spaces and unfolded again wherever needed.

What is a mobile LED wall?

Classic large-format LED walls are built from individual LED cabinets. Their installation usually requires a supporting structure, power, a control system, interconnection of the parts and subsequent configuration.

A mobile All-in-One LED wall uses the same basic direct LED display principle, but the whole system is integrated into a single device.

The ViewSonic LDS136-152 has a display area of roughly 3 × 1.69 metres, a 136" diagonal and a native Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The image is not created by an LCD panel or a projector - it is formed directly by LED modules with a 1.56 mm pixel pitch.

The main difference is the construction. The LED surface is split in the middle and its two halves fold together for transport, reducing the overall width from roughly 3 metres to 1.82 metres. The display can therefore travel in an elevator and reach spaces a complete three-metre LED wall could never enter.

On site the screen is unfolded by hand, locked and connected to power. The manufacturer quotes roughly 10 minutes to get it running. No wall mounting, no LED panel assembly.

One big screen for several rooms

Mobility changes how you can think about a large-format LED screen.

If a hotel has ten conference rooms, it does not need to buy a large LED wall for each of them. One device can move to whichever hall is hosting a conference, presentation or other major event.

The same principle works in office buildings, training centres, schools and universities, and cultural or social venues.

A mobile LED wall can serve a conference in the morning, move to the foyer for a partner presentation, and work in a different hall the next day.

For operations with multiple spaces, one high-quality mobile screen can be more attractive than several fixed display systems.

How are mobile LED walls used in practice?

Mobile All-in-One LED is not just a technology concept. ViewSonic has a track record of deployments of previous generations of foldable LDS displays in hotels, schools, exhibitions and social or event venues.

The principle is the same as with the current LDS136-152 model - create a large LED display surface that is not permanently tied to one place.

The five-star Gaia Hotel: one LED for different event spaces

An interesting example is The Gaia Hotel Bandung, a five-star hotel with extensive conference and event facilities.

The hotel was looking for a way to modernise the display technology in spaces used for conferences, weddings and other social events. A fixed installation of large displays would mean construction work, and each screen would stay tied to one specific room.

The hotel therefore chose the ViewSonic foldable All-in-One LED solution. The mobile design allows the screen to move between different spaces and floors of the hotel as needed.

The benefit is not just LED image quality. One investment in a large-format display can serve several different halls.

Hotels and conference centres with many rooms are exactly the environments where this concept makes the most sense.

Bankstown Sports Group: a screen that did not stay in one hall

The Australian Bankstown Sports Group uses the same principle.

A mobile 135" ViewSonic LED was originally purchased for the Lady Banks Rooftop event space. The operator needed a large, clearly visible image even in an environment with plenty of ambient light.

Operating economics were another factor. External AV equipment could be hired for major events, but with regular use the rental became a recurring cost.

After buying its own mobile LED system, its use expanded. The screen started moving between the group’s other venues, served sports broadcasts, and outside events it also helped the marketing team promote upcoming shows.

One display can fill several different roles over the year instead of sitting unused in a single hall most of the time.

Trade fairs and temporary installations

Trade fairs and exhibitions are another use case.

Peiyu Digital Entertainment, for example, used a foldable 135" ViewSonic All-in-One LED for its presence at Taipei Game Show. The large-format LED created the dominant display surface of the booth without assembling a classic modular LED wall on site.

The mobile design offers the same advantage for temporary exhibitions, corporate presentations or pop-up events. For one-off events we also offer AV equipment rental.

In these applications the biggest benefit is not moving the screen during the event, but the fast deployment of a large LED surface without building a fixed structure.

An LED wall with no construction work

Installing a classic LED wall is not just about the display itself. You need to solve mounting, power supply, signal runs, control electronics placement and often the structural readiness of the space.

With a mobile All-in-One solution, most of that part of the project disappears.

Power supplies, control electronics and other required components are part of the device. The LDS136-152 can work as a standalone display system with no fixed installation.

That can matter in heritage buildings, rented spaces or multi-purpose halls where construction work is unwelcome.

It can also be relocated later. If the use of a room or a whole building changes, the display investment is not tied to one specific space.

A mobile LED wall as a projector alternative

A projector remains a very good solution for many applications, especially when you need a really large image at a reasonable cost. But it has several properties that can be problematic in conference and presentation spaces.

The resulting image depends on ambient light, needs a projection surface and requires suitable projector placement. With a poor installation, presenters or visitors can step into the light path.

Direct View LED works differently. Every pixel emits its own light, so the image is not created by reflection off a screen.

The LDS136-152 reaches up to 600 nits, so it can be used in normally lit interiors. There is no need to dim a conference room just to keep the presentation readable.

LED also offers high contrast and wide viewing angles - the manufacturer quotes 170° both horizontally and vertically for the LDS136-152.

For conference rooms that work in daylight or cannot create ideal projection conditions, large-format LED is an interesting alternative.

Why is a big TV not enough?

Professional LCD displays are another option, commonly available at 75", 86" or 98", and a very practical solution for most meeting rooms.

As the room grows, however, the sheer image area starts to matter.

A 136" display has a diagonal of roughly 3.45 metres and a display area of 3 × 1.69 metres. Compared to a typical 98" display that is a significantly larger image, suitable for conference halls with tens to low hundreds of participants.

LED also has no classic LCD panel. The image is composed of modules that together create one continuous, bezel-free display surface.

Choosing between LCD, a projector and LED is therefore not just about image quality. What matters most is the size of the space, the required image size, lighting conditions and how the room is used. Our pixel pitch simulator can help with the decision.

Durability for frequent moves

For a mobile display, the mechanical durability of the LED surface matters too.

The LDS136-152 uses GOB (Glue-on-Board) technology. The LED modules carry a protective layer that reduces the risk of damaging the LEDs on touch or impact.

That is essential for a device that is not permanently installed and will be handled regularly by staff.

Individual LED modules are accessible from the front and can be replaced separately if a fault occurs.

Height adjustment to fit the room

The LDS136-152 includes a mobile stand with electric height adjustment of the screen.

Unfolding the LED wall itself is manual. The electric mechanism adjusts the height of the already unfolded display, so the image position can be adapted to a specific hall and audience layout.

That helps at conferences with a seated audience, foyer presentations, or spaces where the bottom of the image must sit higher for a clear view from the back rows.

All-in-One means more than the screen

The advantage of this category is the integration of most of the required electronics directly into the system.

The LDS136-152 offers HDMI inputs, an HDMI output, USB, network connectivity, RS-232, Wi-Fi and an OPS slot. It also includes integrated speakers and an Android operating system.

For professional installations it can also connect to external AV systems and be controlled over the network.

The display can therefore work standalone for a simple presentation, or become part of a complete conference-hall AV system - including automation.

Where does a mobile LED wall make the most sense?

Mobile LED is not a universal replacement for a projector or an LCD display. If the screen is to stay permanently in one place, a classic fixed All-in-One LED wall may be a better fit. For a small meeting room, a professional LCD display usually makes more economic sense.

Mobile LED brings the biggest advantage where display requirements change frequently.

Typical examples include:

  • hotels and conference centres - one display for several different halls,
  • corporate training and presentation spaces - conferences, training, presentations and company events,
  • universities and campuses - usable across lecture halls and social spaces,
  • showrooms and customer centres - a large display surface for presentations and multimedia content,
  • museums and galleries - temporary exhibitions without fixed installation,
  • trade fairs and exhibitions - a large LED surface built fast, with no classic LED wall assembly,
  • multi-purpose social venues - the device follows the current programme.

The international deployments show that the biggest value does not have to be image quality alone. Mobility lets one investment serve multiple places and multiple types of events.

ViewSonic LDS136-152 - the current generation of the mobile LED wall

The ViewSonic LDS136-152 represents the current generation of ViewSonic mobile All-in-One Direct View LED displays.

It offers a 136" display area with Full HD resolution, up to 600 nits of brightness, a 1.56 mm pixel pitch and modular GOB LED technology. The whole system sits on a mobile stand and its foldable design allows transport between spaces.

The international references in this article use previous generations of ViewSonic mobile LDS displays. The current LDS136-152 builds on the same concept.

The result sits somewhere between a classic fixed LED wall and a regular large-format display: a three-metre LED screen that needs no fixed installation and can be used wherever it is currently needed. Full parameters, videos and use cases are on the mobile LED wall product page.
