DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives)

A consortium of the major Hollywood studios founded in March 2002 (Disney, Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal and Warner Bros.). It was created so that the transition of cinemas from 35mm film to digital projection would not end in a chaos of incompatible formats: the first digital screenings ran from 1999 on proprietary systems, with every vendor pushing its own solution.

In July 2005 DCI therefore published the unified DCI Standard, which to this day defines picture quality, interoperability and content security in digital cinemas worldwide. [www.dcimovies.com]
