Microsoft has quietly extended the Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme for Windows 10: free security patches for consumers do not end this October, but on October 12, 2027. That matters for cinemas - we routinely find Windows 10 on booth and operations PCs, whether they run scheduling, content management, box office or signage systems.
What exactly changed
- Standard Windows 10 support ended in October 2025 after ten years. The follow-up ESU programme was to run until October 13, 2026 - it now runs until October 12, 2027.
- For consumers ESU is free, but every PC has to be enrolled manually - nothing happens automatically. Enrolment is possible any time until October 12, 2027.
- Eligible editions are Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations. Organisations can pay for ESU.
- If a PC is already enrolled, no action is needed - updates keep installing beyond this October.
Microsoft did not announce the change, it just updated its support page, and gave no reason for the extension. Note that ESU means security fixes only - no new features and no regular technical support.
What it means for the cinema PC
Two things at once: no reason to panic, and no reason to postpone forever. The extra year means you do not have to deal with a Windows 10 operations PC mid-season. At the same time, October 12, 2027 is a hard deadline after which an unpatched system has no place in a cinema network - the operations PC typically touches projection, ticketing and the internet, and an unpatched system is the easiest way in.
- Check that ESU is actually enrolled - without manual enrolment the PC has not received fixes since last October.
- Verify whether the hardware can run Windows 11 - if yes, plan the migration off-season and after a backup; if not, the extra year is exactly the time for a planned machine replacement.
- We do not recommend bypassing the Windows 11 requirements - installing via a modified boot medium (e.g. Rufus) on unsupported hardware is possible, but Microsoft does not guarantee updates on such machines. On a cinema operations PC that would defeat the very reason for upgrading.
